The multitude passed through the short and narrow street of

Pescheria, and thence by the crooked arch to the square de'

Mercanti. Here there were very few, who, in passing before the

niche that divides towards the centre the terrace of the edifice

then called the College of Doctors, did not give a slight glance

at the great statue contained in it of Philip II., who even from

the marble imposed respect, and who, with his arm extended,

appeared to be menacing the populace for their rebellion.
