He united with the others to free the way, and he was certainly
not one of the least active or industrious. A passage was opened.

directed to Renzo, who, in truth, deserved them richly, serving
the high chancellor on this day with more devoted zeal than the
most intrepid of his secretaries. The young mountaineer was
delighted with his condescension, and proud of the honour of
having, as he thought, formed a friendship with Antonio Ferrer.
